6 Paddle Boarding Laws You May Not Know About
6 paddle-boarding laws in the UK that you may not know about
Did you know, under UK Maritime Law, stand-up paddle boards are classed as recreational beach gear or small sea vessels?
Recreational beach gear – inflatable or stand-up paddle board less than 3.5m long
Small sea vessel – a hard stand-up paddle board, longer than 3.5m
In the sea
- If you are using a paddle board which is classed as recreational beach gear, you must keep within 300m of the shore.
- Priority is determined by the craft that has the most manoeuvrability, paddle boarders must give way to vessels such as sailboats that can’t manoeuvre as quickly as a paddle boarder.
On the river
- Priority is determined by size of the crafts. Therefore, paddle boarders must give way to boats which are larger than 15m.
- When assessing priority between two paddle boarders, a paddle board approaching from the right-hand side has priority.
- If you come face-to-face with another paddle boarder, you must pass on the left of the paddle boarder
- In the UK, you are required to hold a license to travel on most waterways, by paddling on rivers and other protected waterways without a license, you risk receiving a hefty fine. You can purchase a British Canoeing membership here, which includes a license.
Advice
- If paddle boarding in the sea, avoid offshore winds – download an app called Windy to keep track of the weather
- Wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid
- Go out paddle boarding with a friend or in a group – it is more fun but also you have support if you do get into any danger
- Avoid swimmers!!!
- Download the app ‘what three words’ in case you get into difficulty. This app provides you with three words which you can quote to emergency services and they will be able to locate you.
- Think about carrying accessories – a whistle, pen knife, torch and a change of clothes
And most importantly… enjoy!

The Lockdown Birthday
With my 21st birthday approaching, I longed for the days of pop music pounding in my ears, the sharp sting of tequila shots running down my throat and good times with my fabulous friends. I knew my 21st would not be celebrated in my usual style but I still wanted to enjoy my day nonetheless.
So there I was, three weeks before my birthday scrolling through my Instagram feed in the hope of finding that perfect outfit. Who said you can’t look good whilst staying at home? As I was scrolling, an ad popped up for a new service called RentMy. There was a photo of a projector and the caption advertised that it was available to rent for just £17 per day!
Suddenly, my whole focused changed from my initial outfit search, I immediately sent the link to my family group chat and asked if we could hold a family film night and rent a projector for the evening.
The big day arrived, and I had left all of the planning to my family. I woke up late in the morning to hear my family scuttling around excitedly downstairs. I got ready for the day and headed downstairs. I was amazed when I opened the lounge door to find that they had converted the whole room into a massive indoor cinema. They had rented the projector, a surround sound system AND a popcorn machine from RentMy… how cool is that?
In the corner there was a large chalkboard which read ‘Now Showing… 101 Dalmatians’ – my all-time favourite! The projector had been easy to set up and my parents had rented it for the whole day which meant we could spend the day watching all of our favourite Disney classics. The retro popcorn machine worked tirelessly, releasing a beautiful buttery scent into the room: the popcorn was fluffy and melted in my mouth, delicious!
The surround sound system made me feel like I was sitting in an actual cinema, long gone are the days where you can pop to the cinema with your friends on a Saturday afternoon so this was certainly the next best thing. The projector was great and allowed us to watch 101 cute puppies on a big screen – what more could you want?
We had the best day and thanks to RentMy, I was able to celebrate my 21st in a way I will never forget! One day into my 21st year and I have already learnt something new: RentMy is for everyone, no matter what gender, age or interest and I am so excited to rent out future gadgets. I definitely would recommend RentMy to anyone wishing to try something new or have a different kind of birthday party!
Sewing Machine Adventures
You know what it’s like – you start a new hobby and get yourself all enthused – think it’s going to be the next big thing in your life especially as George Clooney hasn’t knocked on your door or Brad Pitt asked you for dinner so you have some spare time! Following extensive research – well ten minutes on Amazon (other suppliers are available) you buy all the things you think you need for this latest hobby and you embark on this new venture with passion! That is exactly what happened with my sewing machine – after becoming addicted to The Great British Sewing Bee I thought that I would very soon be the next Dior or Westwood – however my dreams were not to be and very soon my sewing machine just became something I banged my leg on in my bedroom.
That was until I decided that maybe the time just wasn’t right for button holes or seams but still feeling that at some point, I may return to the overlocker I decided to give RentMy a go. Listing was easy and I was surprised when I very quickly received an enquiry from a lovely lady who had been teaching her grand-daughter to sew during lockdown. She felt the time was right for her grand-daughter to fly solo but didn’t want to invest in a machine in case this was a teenage fad.
Deal done and off went my machine – imagine how thrilled I was in a few days to have received a photo of the lovely bag the young lady had managed to sew on her own and no doubt her proud grandma felt just as thrilled. After a week my machine was returned along with a thank you letter. No doubt a sewing machine will be on that young ladies Christmas list! I’m so pleased I tried RentMy as not only did I make some extra cash towards my next hobby but I also made a difference to someone else’s life. Can’t wait to send my little machine off on another adventure!
